This Sunday Against Me! returns to Portland for a sold out show at the Wonder Ballroom.
Against me! formed 20 years ago and the evolution of the band and the music has garnered a following of devoted fans. I remember being fifteen in Chicago and sneaking into The Fireside Bowl (A legendary Chicago venue) right before the release of ‘Against Me! As The Eternal Cowboy’, and was instantly hooked from the passion and energy that both fans and performers exhibited. Now, almost fifteen years later, Laura Jane Grace and company are playing to their biggest crowds yet. As their fan base has grown, so has the music.
After coming out as transgender, Laura Jane Grace composed ‘Transgender Dysphoria blues’, which blew critics away. The record is not a complete departure from their punk roots, but it does have a more bluesy/rock and roll side to it. Their last release ‘Shape Shift With Me’, was the first album written together by the current members, and produced such stand out songs like ‘Norse Truth’ and ‘Delicate, Petite, and Other Things I’ll Never Be’. The album adds a post punk dynamic to songs already influenced by countless genres, and could easily be considered one of 2016’s best records.
Against Me! is political, queer, punk, rock and roll, passionate, and they take these qualities and transform them into what may be one of the best live shows in music. On Sunday September 10th Against Me! will take over the Wonder Ballroom along with up and comers Bleached and The Dirty Nil. Tickets are sold out.
